ORTの新しい仲間、Songbirdsはフォニックスに焦点をあてた新シリーズ。英国でもフォニックスの必要性が再認識され、あらたに編纂された注目のシリーズです。人気の作家兼イラストレーターのJulia Donaldsonが、さまざまな内容の、とてもリズミカルな本をつくりあげました。
イラストは暖かな感じで、お話も一話一話異なっていますが、どこか統一したやさしさと、とぼけた味わいが魅力です。"何でも自分が一番だ"、といばるTop Cat、いくら水をひっかけても臭くて参ったThe Trunk and the Skunk、いたずらな弟に振り回されるLeroyなどなど、フォニックスとは関係なくお話として十分楽しめます。
もちろん、ちゃんとレベル分けされていますし、文字の正しい読み方も自然に身につきます。ちょっとナンセンスな話を読んでいるうちに、例えば子音が重なった音をたくさん目にしていたり、いつの間にか文字と音の関係がわかったり。このシリーズで一挙に、音とリズムを身につけ、しかも文字も読めるように仕組むのはいかがですか。
ステージ1+から6まで、各6冊（６話にClare Kirtley によるTeaching Notes付き）パックが6パック合計36冊出版されています。Teaching Notes（英文）には、何をどう指導すると効果的かが書かれています。
